It's Official - I'm a Blogger!

August 4, 2012 : 1.09 pm
The clouds were playing hide and seek, droplets spoiling the texture of my overcoat. I had stopped by a Red, and traffic was piling up on a busy afternoon at MG Road, Bangalore. I was on my two wheeler, the red beast, which was not too hot with the gloomy climate.
Rajbhavan Road kis tharaf hai?[Which way to Rajbhavan Road?], that question woke me up. Yes, I was heading to Rajbhavan road too, and I was asking the same question to lot of people to catch up. But when someone near asked the same question, it struck me, are they going to the meet too?

August 1, 2012 : 8.30 pm
Argh! Another boring day, when would I ever get back to the blogging spree? I was upset that I was not spending time on my Blog, which once made my life interesting. But with time, I went to the writer's block. Work caught up with me, and spending time with blog seemed to be difficult. Indiblogger was the only blogging community I followed, and I was clicking on random posts in there. It was the chance of this post - Life..Love Interrupted to get my attention, and full attention did it get! Great post in there Nabanita! Scrolled down to jot down a comment, and then scrolled up on the comments. That's when this particular comment, by Mr. Mahesh, caught my eyes...

"... I will be at the Indiblogger Meet at Bengaluru this weekend! Would you be coming? ... "

Mockdrill Havoc at Bangalore

This incident happened at Bommanahalli(Opp. Salarpuria Serenity apartments), and next to my office Kalki Communications Ltd. on 7th August 2012

Another fine day at office(I wonder if fine and boring could be synonyms), after a heavy lunch at Paulosettan, Google Hurdles was the best past time. With flashes of coding and debugging coming in between, it was still a normal afternoon. But it was soon to be not so normal.

Amidst the monotonous rituals, alarming sounds began to buzz. They were coming from all around. Ah, it must be some VIP trying to get to some place, so I soothed myself. But then the Sirens remained, with hopes of silence diminishing. People started looking out, just to see Army Vehicles swishing around and parking in style, trucks sidelining, with people in classic Military green running around. There were people with florescent green and orange life-jackets running around. Wait, did I miss something? What is going on! No one had any idea. I moved on to the terrace, hoping to see a better view. Ambulances where swishing around, it had rained earlier, had a building collapsed? Or is it just a mockdrill? No idea. The hypothesis of Mock drill faded when people were rushed into ambulance, which rushed on again. Roads blocked, people running. Army around put forth the hypothesis of a terror attack, but they were just holding their rifles and enjoying the scene. So then, I uploaded a pic into Instagram
Chaos at Bommanahalli

Indian Journalism - Make it or Break it

I'm not a great fan of politics, not a great fan of following news either. But when I'm jobless, I do go through certain articles. And Times Of India, for some reason is the easiest website to pick up. I had seen those Hindu ads back then, which were pointed on the heart of TOI. But I now realize what they meant, and what they are trying to make. The sole aim of Indian media(not only TOI), is to sensationalize a news. Make it, break it, manipulate it, blow it, hide it, its upto them on what reaches the audience - All for Money.

As a blogger, I know how one feels when his article is not publicized. I do realize the desperation one has to spread the word. But is media is that frantic stage now? Do they have to be? As News reporting channel, they should have certain responsibilities too. But I think, all they care now is to get more hits, create controversies, and keep people involved in a self scripted backstage.

What am I saying? It's a system called comments. Indian news channels, I'd point out two of them here - TOI, and Hindustan Times. Check any article, and scroll down to the Comments. You can see tons of people posting ridiculous comments, and another ton abusing each other for commenting. This creates the audience, now the stage is set. All they have to do is sit back, watch the fun, and earn for the click they get(via ads).

Online shopping deals, for Real? Or just another Scam?

It's the era of Online shopping, sit at home, make a few clicks, wait, and tada the item shipped free to your home. Like in the Flipkart ad, we buy a thing, just looking at the pic("Shaadi se pehle main apka sirf photo dekhi thi"). It's convenient, and yes, tending to be safe. I've been trying to buy a phone lately, and on its research, I came across many lucrative offers. Most of them turned out to be shopping.
I've included the MRP references from Flipkart, and the site offering the deal. Also, in future if any of these deals do not hold/removed, I am not responsible. These information are valid as for today(July 22, 2012)

41% Off! OMG! That's such a great deal(Left Pic). As seen on Snapdeal. Its states the MRP states that its worth Rs. 39,999. And I just took a look at Flipkart, which provides the most accurate MRP(in most cases) or you can go through the official sites and stores, which states its actual MRP as Rs. 28,400.
The Right pic shows even better offer on Ebay(compared to the above)

OMG!(Again), 47% OFF on Xperia GO!(As seen on Ebay Deals) Ahem! Reality check, again Flipkart to the rescue, which state the MRP as Rs. 18,999!!! That's clean bowled! (Oh, sorry for the cricket terms)

Next on prowl, Xperia P. Now I got this phone last week for Rs. 25,203 from a local store of Sangeetha Mobiles. This amount was inclusive of Insurance, Free Home service, and a free Bluetooth headset. Again, on Rediff shopping, it shows a whopping MRP of Rs. 39,900!

Now its the turn of Galaxy Note, on Snapdeal. It shows its MRP as Rs. 38,250. And an attractive discount of 15% to it. Here is a Flipkart link to it, rest is self explanatory

I'm going to add a couple more to the never-ending list

This time, its HTC on Snapdeal. Quoted with MRP. Rs. 39,199, and given a handsome discount of 18%. However, Flipkart, again says another story.

Now onto my favorite offer(on Ebay deals). I've been longing to own this phone, and this offer struck me. It looked a pretty decent one, and yes it is. Except for a few facts. The MRP of Xperia Arc S is around 25k now. And also, the catch in most of the Ebay Deals is a term called Dealer Warranty. This means that you can't get your new mobile to be repaired at any Sony showroom, neither can you claim warranty. If anything happens to the New phone, you have to sent it to the Dealer, and according to his discretion, he may/maynot charge you for the repairs. Now this is a risk you take, if you are really unlucky, you might get hands on a faulty device. And this means your money is lost, nothing to be done.

Now that's what I found when I did a very small research before buying a phone. Finally, I decided to go against these deals and buy a phone from the store. My opinion is either go for Flipkart, or local store. Let me know if you have had similar experiences.

Dhoni's 60 lakh Bike, did he not earn it?

Dhoni's has always been a bike lover, and is there anything wrong in it? He owns 14 bikes(and surprisingly the whole world knows about it, thanks to media), again, what's wrong in it? And to add to the exquisite collection, comes in a monster. A masterpiece which has only 150 copies worldwide, and owned by the likes of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and David Beckham. The Confederate X132 Hellcat is all over news. A bike that the makers call "cheap", costs Rs. 28 Lakhs(minus Tax). On summing up the 110% tax, the price crawls up to Rs. 60 lakhs.
Dhoni tweeted this news recently, oh, and here is how the beast looks.

Hehe, makes me ask the same question - Is that a Bike? Never mind, its a passion for him, and he earned it. My full respect for it. However, the media is blowing this up, well, when its a beast, it deserves some attention right? Ok, accepted. Anyone would feel good on reading a news like that(pure Entertainment). However, what caught my attention, and made me write this post is the comments that followed the posts at - rediff and Yahoo!. I'm quoting a few here

" Fourteen bikes for what? If you can't think of anything else to spend your hard earned money, think of people - going to bed hungry, naked, dying without medical help having no shelter over their head etc. Think of doing something for them ... do something to least of your brotherin and you will be doing for God who is so good and generous to you. "

" These spoilt brats from Bollywood & Indian cricket should go out in the streets and send EVERY Indian kid to school, instead of buying bikes...Bollywood now makes more money for Pakistan thru its singers and stars in India than deprived indians who pampers these parasites."

" atleast he paid all the taxes and brought the bike..unlike sachin who begged...also why is the shame..he is earning he is buying..why u jealous..you also become indian captain if you have the ability "

These are the very few comments found on these sites. For some reason, none of these comments make sense to me, or is it me only? He earned his post, money and fame. Its his job, of which he is doing a pretty good name. These comments almost mean to me like this - If you earn a few extra bucks, don't buy a car - give it to Charity! You don't deserve the money, it's the people's money!. How in world does this make sense?

And to comment on the allegation of Sachin "begging", here is a text from Wiki
On 4 September 2002 India's then finance minister Jaswant Singh wrote to Tendulkar telling him that the government will waive customs duty imposed on the car as a measure to applaud his feat"

Euro 2012 -- PC

Not many know that an add-on to FIFA 12 was released recently, which of-course showcases Euro 2012. At first, I thought it was an all new game put out by EA Sports, but on installing the game, I found the same old "12" icon, with FIFA renamed as Uefa Euro 2012. I doubted if I was cheated, and on opening the game, everything was same. Same intro, same menu, same everything! A bit disappointed, till I discovered something.

Intro
On scrolling on the options in Fifa 12 Menu, I found out a new entry. Yes, it was UEFA Euro 2012! On getting onto it, a totally new interface surprised me. This was unusual for the FIFA series, there was a whole new revamped menu, presentation, and the Euro 2012 atmosphere build up.

What's new?
The game is still FIFA 12, gameplay, physics, graphics, everything remains the same. Or does it? Not exactly! It has all new Stadiums, new Teams, new Commentary, new Gaming system, and totally new atmosphere! If you love FIFA 12, and you are a fan of Football, you'd certainly want to get a feel of this. Let me put down what's new in this again(just to make it clear)
  • -- Game Basis -- FIFA 12(No difference in Engine, or gameplay)
  • --  New Stadiums
  • --  New Teams
  • --  New Commentary
  • --  New Gameplay(Euro 2012, and of course the highlight Expedition)
  • --  New Menu
  • --  Totally new awesome Atmosphere
Wait, new Gameplay?
Well, not exactly new, but a new kind of approach towards game. There are a few options you can explore Euro 2012,
  • --  A Quick match
  • --  UEFA Euro 2012 Campaign
  • --  Expedition
The first one explains itself. The Euro Campaign is what you need if you thoroughly enjoying Euro 2012. Now what's Expedition? This is something new on the Offline campaign. You chose a player, name a Team, and create a startup to the Euro Qualifiers. You have to beat other teams, earn your respect, and build up your team. Now how do you build up a team? Here lies the fun, you get a player of opposition everytime you defeat them. Yes! I totally enjoy doing this, and exploring the various targets opened up in the campaign. If you are an expert player, you'll find this fun, the main reason being your first team would be very basic, slow and dumb(but so would be the opposition)!

Performance and Looks
I'd stick to the same review I put up for FIFA 12 on this occasion, read it here - FIFA 12 -- PC

Facebook Messenger is OUT!

It was just another login for me at Facebook, but there was a hidden surprise. I saw a popup which asked me to install Facebook Messenger! Curious, I installed the setup, which didn't take much time in fact.  This is how it looks at start-up, you can notice the grayish Facebook icon at the task-bar as well. You can install/download the Application from here - https://www.facebook.com/about/messenger

On logging in, it looks just like a detached Facebook sidebar. It has Feeds flowing in, Chat window below, as well the Facebook trios at the top(Friend Requests, Messages and Notifications). Below is a screenshot after logging in.
Clicking on notification blurs the sidebar.
And multiple chat windows work in TABS!
Which I think might be quite useful. Another notable feature was the Dock to Right, which set the Facebook messenger as a Desktop Widget on your PC/Laptop. Its like a Facebook Sidebar, in Windows!
If you find out any interesting features, leave a comment!

[Breaking] Facebook acquires Instagram!

This news is create a vibe all over the Internet world. Yes, Instagram, an app which was getting overwhelmed in the past few weeks is getting a greater boost. IFacebook apparently owned Instagram for 1 million dollars. Here is what Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg had to say in his latest post.

I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.

For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.

We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

That's why we're committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.

We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.

These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram's experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure.

This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.

We're looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we're going to be able to build together.
You can find this here - Mark Zuckerberg. Now that certainly means Facebook photos redefined. What do you think?

No Touching, No Touching. Gender Taboo in India

Gender a.k.a Sex has always been a taboo topic in India. With such diversity in culture and lifestyle, India has reached a point wherein the Modern Lifestyle stands up to the Traditional Culture. Culture in India is unique, to those who live in India, they know about it. To those who do not, Indian culture is Orthodoxy(a bit too much I should say). We Indians may not realize it, and its quite musing when we come to know about this fact.

One day, I was watching a program in Discovery Channel(I don't remember the title), which was on miracles and godly beings. Somewhere in between, they pointed on certain funny or strange rituals done over the world. Even I thought it as funny by the way they presented it. But then next they commented "... such rituals would be no surprise to Indians, as every citizen believes in these rituals and even practice it..." . This is when I realized how unique, and how different our culture is from the Western Culture(which apparently is gaining popularity)

Now let me get to an incident that resulted in this post. We were going out for a treat the other day. At a traffic signal, one of my friends noted something in a bus next to us. A young man had his hands over his girlfriend's(I suppose) shoulder, which was looking a bit awkward at the angle we were looking. My friend burst in laughter and gossiped it around. Now what's wrong with that? Nothing is wrong, but I would just like to point a few things

Use your home PC from Office or anywhere!

This technology is not such a big deal today, but it was once. I remember when my friend Jithin used the Remote Desktop Connection app to control his home PC from his new Phone(Nokia E72). A few years back, this was exciting for us, but now, its just another routine in work. IT companies demand such working conditions, wherein you control a PC of your branch office or Customer location, from your Office. I should say it also takes away the pain of instructing your parents to search for a Resume in your PC(Thanks for this sentence Rohit)!

So let me get into the technical details. Its simple, in fact very easy to setup a remote desktop connection. All you need to have is a Software installed in both the computers(The PC/Laptop you want to access, and the PC/Laptop you are working on), and ofcourse Internet Connectivity

Modern Lifestyle - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Life style, what has it been for the past few years? A havoc, I should say. I haven't made a detailed analysis on the lifestyle of different people, rather here is my thoughts on what is happening around me. How it was once, and how it is now. There is a definite change in each and every aspect, be it clothing, gadgets, vehicles, food or friends. Things have changed, but a question remains - is it Good? Bad? or Ugly?

So where do I begin? Hm... Virteacon says Technology, and let it be(this would be the major content of this article). Technology is growing at a pace we never imagined, and its definitely making impact on life. There are tons of examples around, wondering what? Let me quote a few I have noticed.
         - Computers! God, what is technology without that intelligent piece of artistry. Let me go back 10 years, computers to kids were like oh my god! That's a Computer! But now, its like the air we breathe? A major turn around. I still remember whining to my parent to own a computer, which went on till I was in 10th grade. And when I owned one, I had strict instructions too - an hour a day(not more!). But now? I see my cousins, who are in 3rd grade, playing Games(Violent, vulgar, and you name it) whenever they want! They own PSP's, poking it around wherever they go, or high end Consoles. Old retro style Sega Video games are history(I still have sweet memories of Contra, and Mario!). Now Computers have gone cheap, easily available, and one of the basic amenities. No Computers? No Future, I guess.
